Solemnity of the Ascension

Solemnitas de Ascensionem

PRELUDE:             OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST

Since our great high priest, Christ Jesus, bears the Name above all names,

Reigning SON OF GOD, surpassing other titles, powers, and claims,

Since to Heaven our LORD has passed, let us hold our witness fast.

Since we have a priest WHO suffered, knowing weakness, tears, and pain,

WHO, like us, was tied and temped, unlike us, without a stain,

Since HE shared our lowly place, let us boldly seek HIS grace.

Sacrifice and suffering over, now HE sits at God’s right hand,

Crowned with praise, no more an outcast, HIS preeminence long-planned,

Such a great high priest we have, strong to help, supreme to save.

Love’s example, hope’s attraction, faith’s beginning and its end,

Pioneer of our salvation, might advocate and friend,

Jesus, high in glory raised, our ascended LORD be praised.

ANTIPHON:         Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens?

This Jesus WHOM you saw ascending into Heaven

will return as you saw HIM go, alleluia (Acts of the Apostles 1:11).

HYMN:                   A HYMN OF GLORY LET US SING

A hymn of glory let us sing:  new songs through the world shall ring:  alleluia, alleluia.

Christ, by a road before untrod, ascends unto the throne of God.

Refrain:       HE is risen, and ascended.  HE is risen, and ascended, alleluia.

The holy apostolic band, upon the Mount of Olives stand, alleluia, alleluia,

And with HIS faithful followers see their LORD ascend in majesty.  [refrain]

To whom the shining angels cry:  why stand and gaze upon the sky?  Alleluia, alleluia.

This is the Savior, thus they say, this is HIS glorious triumph day.  [refrain]

You see HIM now ascending high, up to the portals of the sky, alleluia, alleluia.

Hereafter Jesus you shall see returning in great majesty.  [refrain]

O LORD, our homeward pathway bend, that our unwearied hearts ascend, alleluia, alleluia.

Where, seated on YOUR FATHER’S throne, YOU reign of KING OF KINGS alone.  [refrain]

FIRST READING

Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

RESPONSORIAL

Psalms 47:2, 3, 6-9

Antiphon:  God mounts HIS throne to shouts of joy, a blare of trumpets for the LORD.

All you people, clap you hands, shout to God with cries of gladness,

for the LORD, the MOST HIGH, the awesome, is the Great King over all the Earth.

God mounts HIS throne amid shouts of joy, the LORD, amid trumpet blasts.

Sing praise to God, sing praise.  Sing praise to our King, sing praise.

For King of all the Earth is God; sing hymns of praise.

God reigns over the nations, God sits upon HIS holy throne.

SECOND READING

Ephesians 1:17-23

Brothers and sisters: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.

SEQUENCE:  Christ the LORD is Risen Today

Christ the LORD is risen today; Christians, haste your vows to pay.

Make your joy and praises known at the PASCHAL VICTIM’S Throne.

For the sheep, the LAMB has bleed, sinless in the sinner’s stead.

Christ the LORD is risen on high, now HE lives no more to die.

Christ the VICTIM undefiled, God and sinners reconciled,

When in strange and awful strife, met together death and life.

Christians on this happy day, haste with joy your vows to pay.

Christ the LORD is risen on high, now HE lives no more to die.

Hallowed, this the dawn of praise, Easter – queen of all our days;

From all compass points come forth:  East and West and South and North.

Let the peoples praise YOU, LORD; be, by all that is, adored.

Let all nations shout and sing:  glory, praise the PASCHAL KING.

Say, O wondering Mary, say what you saw along the way:

I beheld where Christ was lain:  empty Tomb and angels twain.

I beheld the glory, bright, of the risen LORD of light,

Christ, my LORD is risen again; now HE lives and lives to reign.

Christ, WHO once, for sinners bled, now the firstborn from the dead.

Throned in endless might and power, lives and reigns forevermore.

Hail, ETERNAL HOPE on high, hail our King of Victory.

Hail, THOU Prince of Life adored.  Help and save us, gracious LORD.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia, ALLELUIA, Alleluia, ALLELUIA, Alleluia, ALLELUIA

Go and teach all nations, says the LORD;

I AM with you always, until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:19-20).

Alleluia, ALLELUIA, Alleluia, ALLELUIA, Alleluia, ALLELUIA

HOLY GOSPEL

Saint Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

OFFERTORY:       SING PRAISE TO GOD WHO REIGNS ABOVE

Sing praise to God WHO reigns above – the God of all creation,

The God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation.

With healing balm, our souls are filled; all our laments, with peace, are filled.

To God:  all praise and glory.

O God, what YOUR great power has made in mercy YOU are keeping;

By morning glow or evening shade, YOUR eye is never sleeping.

IN the dominion of YOUR might, all things are just and good and right.

To God:  all praise and glory.

We seek YOU, LORD, in our distress; O God, in mercy, hear us.

O SAVIOR, see our helpless ness and come with peace to cheer us.

For this we thanks and praise YOU, LORD, WHO are by one and all adored.

To God:  all praise and glory.

All who confess Christ’s holy NAME, give God the paise and glory,

And all who know God’s powers, proclaim:  Give God the praise and glory.

Cast every idol from its throne, God is the LORD and HE alone.

To God:  all praise and glory.

The sparrow will find a home, near to YOU, O my God.

How happy we who dwell with YOU forever in YOUR House.

For ever we sing to YOU, of YOUR goodness, O God,

Proclaiming to all the world of YOUR faithfulness and love.
